Client: The Horizon Foundation

An Emerging Thought Leader

The Horizon Foundation was created in 1998 by community leaders of Howard County, Maryland. Although they are a static funder of grants, they have taken a long-term strategic view of promoting health in the community. In 2012, with a change of leadership, The Horizon Foundation sought to increase awareness of their role as an independent thought leader in the community, providing an unbiased voice and source of action on challenging public health issues.

Visualizing An Identity

The Horizon Foundation and outside communications firm, The Hatcher Group, hired Klinedinst Design to revitalize the Horizon Foundation’s visual branding including: logo, stationery, visual identity and style guide. The new visual identity communicates the foundation’s mission of improving health and wellness in Howard County, Maryland. Based on research provided by The Hatcher Group, we moved from exploration to execution in the development of a new Horizon Foundation brand signature and visual identity system. We also developed a comprehensive style guide used by The Horizon Foundation’s internal communications team, and by their outside creative and communications consultants.

Healthy Result

With the launch of its new brand identity, the Horizon Foundation has gained increased awareness as a thought leader. This in turn has led to an increase in funding of initiatives that improve the health and wellness of the citizens of Howard County.

In 2012, we embarked on a re-branding process as we sought to increase awareness as a funder and thought leader in promoting health and wellness in Howard County. We hired Klinedinst Design to create a new logo based on findings from the brand audit created by an outside communications firm. Karen Klinedinst worked closely with us and our communications firm to create a graphic identity that better reflects our mission. We love the colors and positive energy of our new logo, and it’s been well received in the community. Karen Klinedinst made the process a very pleasant experience. Her expertise and guidance in selecting an outside vendor for our business cards and business Stationery was invaluable.” —Nikki Highsmith-Vernick, Horizon Foundation
